How to calculate fuel consumption

Consumption (l/100 km) = Litres / Kilometres × 100 Litres per trip = Consumption × Distance / 100 Cost = Litres × Price per litre

Example. A car drove 450 km and used 36 litres: 36 / 450 × 100 = 8 l/100 km. A 700 km trip at this consumption takes 56 litres. At 62 ₽ per litre, that's 3,472 ₽.

How to measure real consumption

  1. Fill the tank until the nozzle clicks off and reset the trip meter.
  2. Drive as usual, preferably at least 300–500 km.
  3. Fill the tank again at the same station. The number of litres is the fuel used.

The on-board computer often under-reports consumption by 5–10%. On the motorway at 90–110 km/h consumption is usually at its lowest; in city traffic jams it's 30–50% higher. Air conditioning adds 0.5–1 l/100 km, a roof rack up to 1–2 litres.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate petrol consumption per 100 km?

Divide the litres filled by the kilometres driven and multiply by 100. For example, 40 litres over 500 km is 8 l/100 km.

How much does fuel for a trip cost?

Multiply the distance by the consumption, divide by 100 and multiply by the price per litre. The calculator does this automatically and splits the total between passengers.
