How BMI is calculated
BMI = Weight (kg) / Height² (m)
Example. Height 175 cm, weight 72 kg: 72 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 72 / 3.0625 ≈ 23.5. That is a normal weight.

Limitations of BMI
BMI does not distinguish between fat and muscle. Athletes with a lot of muscle may come out “overweight” with a normal amount of fat, while older people with little muscle may come out normal despite excess fat. That is why doctors also look at waist circumference: health risk is higher if it exceeds 94 cm in men and 80 cm in women.

Frequently asked questions
What BMI is considered normal?
18.5 to 24.9 for adults. For example, at a height of 170 cm a normal weight is roughly 53.5 to 72 kg.
Is the calculator suitable for children?
No. For children and teenagers, BMI is assessed using WHO percentile tables for age and sex. For a child, it is best to see a paediatrician.
Does BMI depend on sex and age?
For adults the scale is the same for men and women. Small deviations are acceptable with age; a doctor can assess this.
