When a letter is needed
If a child will miss lessons for a reason other than illness — a trip, a family event, a competition — parents write a letter in advance. This way the absence counts as having a valid reason, and the school knows where the child is.
The school decides who the letter should be addressed to: for 1–3 days the form teacher is often enough, for longer — the head teacher. The rules are usually set out in the school's attendance policy.
What to include
the child's full name and class;
the dates of absence;
the reason — «по семейным обстоятельствам» (for family reasons) is enough;
a statement that the parents take responsibility for the child's life and health and for catching up on missed material.

Frequently asked questions
Is a certificate needed after an absence covered by a letter?
No. A doctor's certificate is needed if the child was ill. It is not required for an absence requested by the parents.
Can the school refuse?
The school may ask you to agree the dates and a plan for catching up, especially before tests. It has no right to forbid the family from travelling, but absences affect assessment.
