In simple terms
The retirement age is the age from which the Social Fund of Russia (Социальный фонд, СФР, SFR) grants an old-age insurance pension. It used to be 60 for men and 55 for women. Since 2019 the age has been raised gradually, and the transition period ends in 2028: men will retire at 65 and women at 60.
Age alone is not enough. To receive an insurance pension you also need:
- at least 15 years of insurance record;
- at least 30 pension points (ИПК, IPK).
If you lack the record or the points, you can receive a social pension 5 years after the retirement age.
Table by year of birth
| Year of birth (men / women) | Retirement age | Year of retirement |
|---|---|---|
| 1959 / 1964 | 60.5 / 55.5 years | 2019–2020 |
| 1960 / 1965 | 61.5 / 56.5 years | 2021–2022 |
| 1961 / 1966 | 63 / 58 years | 2024 |
| 1962 / 1967 | 64 / 59 years | 2026 |
| 1963 / 1968 and later | 65 / 60 years | 2028 and later |
Note that in 2023, 2025 and 2027 nobody retires by age on general terms — this is a result of the transition schedule.
Example
A woman was born on 10 March 1967. Her retirement age is 59, so she gains the right to a pension on 10 March 2026 (1967 + 59 = 2026). She can apply in advance, but not earlier than a month before that date. If by that day she has 15 years of record and 30 points, the pension is granted from the date the right arose.
A man born in 1963 will retire at 65, in 2028. You can check your age from your date of birth in the age calculator and the pension calculator.
Who can retire earlier
- Long record: men with 42 years of record and women with 37 years — 2 years earlier, but not before 60 and 55 respectively.
- Mothers of many children: with three children at 57, with four at 56, with five or more at 50 (with 15 years of record).
- People who work in the Far North, workers in hazardous and heavy industries, teachers, medical staff and some other professions — under special rules.
- Workers made redundant 2 years before retirement who cannot find a job — on referral from the employment centre, if they have the required record.
For many early pensions the start date is also shifted by the transition schedule, so check your own date with the SFR.
How to avoid mistakes
- Do not confuse the retirement age with the age of a pre-retiree (предпенсионер): pre-retiree benefits start 5 years before retirement.
- Do not confuse insurance record with total work experience: only periods for which contributions were paid count, plus some «non-insurance» periods (army service, childcare up to 1.5 years).
- A pension is not granted automatically to everyone: if the SFR has not offered to arrange it for you, apply through Gosuslugi (Госуслуги) or at an SFR client service office.
- If you postpone retirement, your points and the fixed payment are increased by bonus coefficients.
In Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus
Russia
The age has been raised gradually since 2019 (Federal Law No. 350-FZ). In 2026 men born in 1962 retire at 64 and women born in 1967 at 59. Besides age, you need 15 years of insurance record and 30 pension points.
Kazakhstan
In Kazakhstan men retire at 63. For women the age is 61 in 2026–2027, then it rises by six months a year to 63 in 2031.
Belarus
In Belarus the increase was completed in 2022: men retire at 63 and women at 58. A labour pension requires at least 20 years of insurance record.
